WHY FIT4

FACT – Regular exercise can reduce the risk of heart disease by up to 35%.

Why....Reducing Dementia risk with exercise

Your Future Self Will Thank You!

The evidence is clear.  Regular physical activity is one of the most effective ways to protect both physical and mental wellbeing……

Why Being Active Matters for Your Body, Mind and Future

When people hear the word exercise, it often brings up images of intense workouts, crowded gyms or needing to be “fit” already. In reality, being active is much simpler and far more achievable than many of us think.

Exercise is not about chasing perfection or pushing to extremes. It is about helping your body and mind work better now and in the future.

Small amounts make a real difference
One of the most important things to know is that you do not need to do a lot to see benefits. Regular movement, whether that is swimming, walking, strength training, fitness classes or gentle activity, has been shown to significantly improve health and wellbeing.

According to the NHS, regular physical activity can reduce your risk of major illnesses such as coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer. It can also lower your risk of early death by up to 30%. These benefits are achieved through consistent, manageable activity rather than extreme or high intensity routines.

Protecting your long-term health

People who take part in regular physical activity have a lower risk of developing a wide range of health conditions, including:

  • Coronary heart disease and stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Bowel cancer
  • Breast cancer in women
  • Early death
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Hip fracture
  • Falls, particularly among older adults
  • Depression
  • Dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease

Exercise supports the whole body. It helps strengthen the heart, improve circulation, regulate blood sugar levels, keep joints mobile and maintain muscle and bone strength as we age.

These benefits help make everyday life easier, from climbing stairs and carrying shopping to maintaining balance and independence for longer.

It is not just physical. It is mental too.

The benefits of being active go well beyond physical health. Regular exercise is proven to help reduce stress, improve mood and support mental wellbeing. Many people find that moving more helps them sleep better, feel more confident and manage anxiety or low mood more effectively.

Exercise also plays an important role in brain health. Staying active is linked to a lower risk of cognitive decline and dementia, helping to keep the mind sharper for longer.

Exercise looks different for everyone

One of the biggest barriers to getting started is the belief that exercise has to look a certain way. In reality, the best form of activity is the one that fits into your life and feels achievable.

For some people, that might mean gym sessions or fitness classes. For others, it may be swimming, walking, cycling or gentle strength and balance work. What matters most is consistency rather than intensity.

You do not need to compare yourself to anyone else. You do not need to be good at exercise. You just need to start where you are.

Supporting you every step of the way

At South Downs Leisure, we believe exercise should feel welcoming, supportive and inclusive. Whether you are completely new to activity, returning after time away or looking to build confidence, our facilities and teams are here to help you move in a way that works for you.

Because being active is not about changing who you are.
It is about helping you feel stronger, healthier and more confident in everyday life.

Start small. Move more. Feel the difference
